Instant Motivation

For this assignment, I was asked to create packaging for something that was absent from my life. At the beginning of my senior year, that was motivation. Rather than designing a “magic bullet” product, I wanted to create a package that actually evoked the experience of trying to get motivated. I rigged an elastic band to the box’s lid so when you first try to open it, there’s some unexpected resistance. And if you let go or get distracted for even a second, the box snaps shut—and you’re back at square one, in need of motivation.

I wanted the package exterior to look bright and energized, so “customers” would believe its promise of instant motivation within. I chose the low pyramidal shape because it felt heavy and grounded; its lines suggest upward motion, but it looks like it would take a lot of momentum to get off the ground.

Process for a conceptual packaging design project-what would it look like if you could buy instant motivation?
